STORIES BEHIND THE PIECES

LABANDERA for the MALAYA EXHIBIT. This is inspired by my Yayabi. Actually, Yaya sya ng bunso namin hehehe pero feeling krisakino ako tinatawag ko syang YAYAAAAAA plis kuk my lunch naaaah! Ganyan! Tapos tinatawag nya ko by my government name!!! Kaloka feeling nya titser ko sya!! 🤣

Kasi nag absent labandera namin noon teenager pa kami, we’re the same age, tinawag nya ko ha, ngarerelak ako sa room ko. Sabi nya DAYANAAAAA halika maglaba tayo. Kalerki!!! Perstaym (and last) ko sumahod bilang labandera! I painted this piece during the pandemic, many memories crossed my mind, instead of dwelling on homesickness, I paint. Meet Alice Conde my Yayabiiiiiiii. 😁🌹❤️

SARIMANOK kasi simbolo din sya ng pinas. Kasali ito sa MALAYA EXHIBIT.

The truth, my inspiration here is the painting of my idol (hindi nya alam, now alam na nya), my friend, batchmate sa UST cafa, one of the malulupit na artists na kilala ko, si Paul Rocero

I can look at pictures of birds, I watched them with my grandson on YT, but I’m not in the level of touching or going near a live one. I will just look and run!!!

MALAKAS AT MAGANDA inspired by Filipino folk tales and fables, our version of Adam and Eve. Mga lumang kwento na pinagaralan namin noong elementarya o hayskul. I wish I could get books of what we studied back then so I can share it with my grandchildren. I am so glad to have this piece in MALAYA EXHIBIT as it is not a realistic piece kahit na its a nude painting. I learned from my friend Paul, that my style is pop realism. Hehehehe mostly kasi cubism gawa ko, medyo abstract. I kinda like the cartoony style, also leaning to Mauro MALANG Santos, Antonio Austria, Ang Kiukok, and Bencab styles. The 2nd picture is just a reference to the books we studied back in my elementary days, the composition is my original.

PANGALAY my painting and my reference. 4th but not the least, for the MALAYA EXHIBIT. Backstory… My favorite subject for my paintings are people and movements and I’m specially attracted to dancing and costumes because I am also a fashion designer.

This is my version of PANGALAY dance, from one of our Filipino tribes, the Tausug. Tausug, according to Wikipedia, means people of the current, water current. They live near the ocean. They are in Zamboanga, Mindanao.

Why did I paint this when I am from Luzon? I painted Pandango sa ilaw, sayaw sa Banga, Tinikling. It is still a Filipino Folk Dance. The main reason for this inspiration is because my son in law is a Tausug. My daughter converted to Islam, my grandchildren are all Muslims, they are half Tausug and half Tagalog. If they did not know yet, I am very proud of them and I am honored to be a part of their family. I respect their belief, I’m also studying their customs that I may leave more paintings dedicated to my grambebbies. Plus, me and my “balae” are close friends and she is a very good cook! Labyu maaaarrrssss!!! 😁😁😁🌹🌹🌹

A touching moment at the event, (I am sorry I didn’t catch here name, she is a journalist, a reporter for a tv, vlog, media) she approached me at almost the end of the event, everyone was leaving, she held my arm and thanked me. I smiled at her and thanked her too, she continued, that she appreciate I painted this piece and the story behind it. She is a Maranao and her husband converted to Islam too, like my baby girl. What do say in that moment? My heart is full. I love my daughter and I am proud of her, I told the lady that I am proud of her husband too.

With everything that was going on in that event, I met a lot of people, I am overwhelmed, my friend ate Raina telling me to calm down a bit 🤣 I am so happy to see the people I invited came. Touched ako opkors.

This part is the most meaningful one. Her showing of gratitude to me made me feel like a very cute little baby salagubang! Balakayojan! I am very grateful and honored, and I want to let you all know that each piece, big or small, I paint what is in my heart and how I imagined it to look like before they were finished on a canvas.

Thank you all for coming to see our MALAYA EXHIBIT at the PCG YYC.
